Many people do not realize that cancer is not just a human condition; it affects our pets as well. In fact, cancer is the number one disease-related killer of dogs and cats. Just like with people, the earlier cancer is caught the better. However, many people aren’t aware of what to look for and often miss symptoms that would make early cancer treatment easier. There are several common symptoms that you want to be on the lookout for with your pets.
One of the most common symptoms is a bulge in the skin. Not all lumps and bumps on or under your dog or cat’s skin will be cancerous, but there is no way to know for sure without getting your veterinarian involved. Other symptoms include a change in appetite, sudden weight loss and obvious pain, like limping. These should all be cause for concern and an immediate appointment with your veterinarian.
There are also symptoms that you might not associate with something like cancer. These can sometimes include coughing or difficulty breathing, depression and lethargy or even problems going to the bathroom. It really boils down to the pet having a change in their usual routine and personality. Having a good relationship with your veterinarian, where they know your pet well, can make all the difference when diagnosing cancer.
