Mental & Physical Fitness

Keeps Dogs Healthy, Too!

Most people recognize the importance of mental and physical fitness in their lives.  But did you know that both mental and physical fitness are equally important for our canine family members, too?  There are some basic things that you might not have thought about that you can do every day to have a positive impact on your dog’s health.  There are also activities that you can make part of your daily routine that will offer mental and physical benefits for both you and your dog.

Nutrition, for example, is very important for everyone, and that includes dogs, too.  Talk to your veterinarian to help you weed through the many choices and all of the advertisements-many of which are misleading- to choose the best food for your pet.  There are many price points, and you don’t always have to go with something expensive, but you should never go with the lower-priced pet foods.  That would be the equivalent of feeding your dog junk or fast food very day and would definitely lead to health problems and a shorter life.

Something as simple as changing the water in your dog’s bowl once or twice a day makes a difference, as well.  When dogs eat and then drink water, the crumbs that fall in the water dish attract more germs and possibly insects.  Just letting a bowl sit for days or only adding water and never cleaning the bowl can lead to unsanitary and unhealthy conditions.  Drinking plenty of fresh, clean water is good for everyone, including our canine friends.

Playing with your dog stimulates the mind and body.  Dogs get bored and need attention, just like people.  Playing games with your dog can be fun and also educational if you incorporate some commands, such as fetch, sit and lay down, just to name a few.  Games can be played inside or outside, which brings me to my next point.  Take your dog outside at least twice a day.  Although caloric intake is more important than exercise for controlling a dogs’ weight, there are many benefits to getting your pet outside, moving and exploring.  Dogs are naturally fairly active, although it varies significantly based on breed and age.  You should check with your veterinarian to see if a simple walk around the block will do or if your dog would do better with a long hike, a run with you or playtime with other dogs.

Mental stimulation is just as important as outdoor physical activity.  Imagine if you were stuck inside your house all the time!  Your dog knows the inside of the house very well, but outside, there are all kinds of stimuli and an array of new things to see, smell and hear, not to mention new people and other pets to meet.  Your dogs also enjoy “catching up” with the neighbors they already know.  Another kind of mental stimulation that cannot be overstated is “TLC.”  Cuddle with your dogs; praise and pet them.  They give you unconditional love, so let them know how much you love them, too.  Talking to your canine family members helps them feel included in the family dynamic.  Snuggling on the couch or just petting and staying close by with a hand on your dogs back while you’re watching TV can mean the world to you canine companion.  In short, make the most of the time with your dogs.  The mental and physical fitness benefits go both ways and will enrich your life as much as theirs.
